Song: My first friend

You were the first person I knew who was my height
The first person I knew whose hands and feet were the size of mine
You were my first friend

We raced down the walkway while were were flower girls
We bragged about how in our hair were pearls
I put my finger in a candle at your sister's baptism
Sometimes we laughed so hard I would have a spasm

Laughter was our answer
Never shall those memories dissolve
We did fashion shows at home
We even danced in the movie theater

Our family reunions
Our nicknames for our relatives
Sleep overs at our aunt's house
The songs we sang over and over
I still know the words

Summers of adventures
Trails we set ablaze
The journeys we took
The mountains we climbed only grew higher
The higher the mountains the more crucial they were

Penury stole your treasured crown
But it didn't steal your laughter
Fortitude is your glory
Grace is your story
Hero is your tale
I hope someday I can follow your trail

Our pictures bring me gifts
I remember again
Who I used to be
The days when we danced in the rain
Now I see
Who I will be for eternity

You were the first person I knew who was my height
The first person I knew whose hands and feet were the size of mine
You were my first friend
If I could tell you only one thing it would be that you are my best friend

  1. This is really touching. :) I especially like the first two lines, which you repeat towards the end: very simple, yet very sincere, like the best kind of poetry.
